When starting a new business or trying to grow an existing one, we get excited about new potential customers and clients. We are welcoming and happy they want to work with us. Not only to get the momentum rolling but to get revenue coming in.  I find with a lot of potential clients we tend to fit our product and services with what they need. But sometimes we can’t put a square peg in a round hole. If we sit back and look at the client’s needs, we may not be the right fit for them, and they might not be the kind of client for us. We can come off as desperate or insincere, a jack of all trades and a master of none, or waste a lot of money on marketing that is ineffective.  

Learning to say “no” to a potential client can be very hard. We don’t want to give up a sale, yet what sacrifices are we making to make them happy? In the long run, neither one of us will be happy. We can’t be everything to everyone…
